5 Chain Restaurants You Have To Try If You Are In Japan

Japan is very well known for its cuisine. Food in Japan is not very expensive, if you know the right places to go. Here are 5 chain restaurants that you should definitely try sooner or later if you are planning a trip to Japan.

1) スシロー(Sushi Rō)

Sushi Rō is a very popular 回転寿司(=kaiten zushi) chain restaurant in Japan. Founded over 30 years ago, it offers many varieties of sushi, and the price is ridiculously low. Almost every plate is 100¥ plus tax, and the menu also includes ramen, tempura, udon noodles and even desserts. Even if Sushi Rō is cheap, the quality is absolutely good, which makes this restaurant a must-go if you love sushi.

2) 鳥貴族(Torikizoku)

Torikizoku is one of my favorite places to eat in Japan. Also founded more than 30 years ago, Torikizoku is an 居酒屋(Izakaya), an informal Japanese pub. Specialized in 焼き鳥(yakitori, skewered chicken), it also offers ramen and desserts. The atmosphere is the main reason why I love Torikizoku (or Toriki, for friends). The place is usually very boisterous and energetic, with customers talking to each other in a very lively way. Each plate comes with 2 big skewers and prices start from 300¥. Cheap and delicious.

3) モスバーガー(MOS Burger)

Mos Burger is not exactly what I would call "traditional Japanese restaurant" but it does the job. It is supposed to be the Japanese version of typical American fast-food restaurants, and it is now the second largest fast-food franchise in Japan after McDonald's Japan. Every month there are new burgers only available for a limited time; they are usually the combination of American fast-food burgers with typical Japanese flavors, like teriyaki chicken. MOS Burger is cheap and probably a good idea if want to take a break from Japanese food and eat something different during your trip to the land of rising sun.

4) 松屋(Matsuya)

Matsuya is one of the most popular Japanese chain restaurants, established in Japan in 1966, serving 牛丼(=gyūdon, beef bowl) and curry. You can order by selecting your meal at a ticket machine. It is the a good place to eat a quick meal when you are in a rush.

5) 一蘭ラーメン(Ichiran Ramen)

Ramen Ichiran is probably the most well-known ramen chain in Japan, established in the 60's. There is a reason why Ramen Ichiran is so popular (there is usually a long line outside every shop at lunch and dinner hours): you can completely customize your ramen, from the number of toppings to the "level of spiciness". Ichiran is so popular that they also sell pre-packaged ramen online (on Amazon etc.). If you are looking for a ramen place and you don't know where to go, Ichiran Ramen might be the best choice for you.
